August Zentangle challenges

I’ve been a little distracted this week with mulling over choices in my first forays into bookbinding (projects yet to be done),  but I wasn’t too surprised to see the Monday August 1 challenge of the week be the new Zentangle tangle “Pendrills”…   especially after opening my newsletter from the Zentangle folks last night.   So I whipped up this little piece this evening after dinner.   Not much to say.. at the moment all I could think of was to use this tangle either as a border, a string or to fill a space with it.  I started mostly with the string idea, where I drew out a string, and started following it with the pattern, somewhat..

This week’s (August 8-15) challenge was called “Opposites Attract” and we were invited to either create a straight-lined string (framework) and then fill with curved patterns, or a curved string and fill with straight-lined patterns.

I took the straight lined string approach first,  kind of the simple side…

And then the curved string approach, and hmm.. is this a new tangle on the upper left that I’ve come up with? Anyway, I liked the way this one came out even more..

Challenges #31 and #32

The Zentangle challenge #31 at iamthediva’s blog was to create a ‘fairy habitat’.   I’ll be honest,  I had a hard time getting motivated to do this one.  I generally don’t like creating something specifically representational.  And then I reminded myself it’s just a guideline or a theme, and I was open to interpreting it my way..

So I drew a random curvy string on my tile, keeping some open spaces and room to do a border tangle, and chose mostly organic looking tangle patterns plus a couple of fun ones..    then I just started filling in here and there.  I ended up much happier with the end result.

Challenge #32, by  Carole Ohl, CZT,  encouraged us to do an image using 4 specific tangle patterns: Pais, Baton, Keenees and Zedbra.
I do sometimes find myself shying away from bold black and white patterns such as Zedbra, but I enjoyed the interplay of these four very differently structured patterns. Here’s my first take on it. Still on the fence on whether I want to actually send it in..

(edited to add .. just sent this first one in!)

And here’s my second attempt (posted 7/27) at the challenge, so I have one to keep…
